The Egyptian-British cardiothoracic surgeon, Prof. Sir Magdi Habib Yacoub has promised to build “Rwanda Heart Centre” expected to provide cardiovascular disease treatment and prevention services in the country.
In a three-day visit to Rwanda, started from June 1, 2018, Prof. Sir Magdi Habib Yacoub together with his two architects, on this Saturday, visited the plot located in Kigali at Kanombe Military Hospital and the Professor proved that he is wholeheartedly grateful to build such a historic and crucial Centre in the Thousand Hills Country, Rwanda.
“There is a great need for having a Centre of excellence to deal with heart disease at every level including complex services, prevention research and more importantly trainings”, Said The Professor.
According to the Minister of Health, Dr. Diane Gashumba, Rwandans will benefit a lot from the Centre as it is geared towards the drastic cut of deaths of the people suffering from cardiac diseases.
“The program will focus on prevention and treatment and training of our young doctors to uphold their knowledge and ensure that we cut out the rate of mortality due cardiovascular diseases”, said the Minister.
“We thank him very much for his commitment to support our government, specifically the Ministry of Health”, Added the Minister.
Prof. Sir Magdi Habib Yacoub explains that he has found Rwandan government willing to undoubtedly partner with him in his project and that the collaboration will remain impeccable.
“What I have seen today is the ability to collaborate and it is the benefit of Rwandan people who deserve to have the center because the heart disease is the number one killer”, Professor underscores.
Colonel Dr. Jean Paul Bitega, The Director General of Kanombe Military Hospital, which provided the land on which the center will be built, said that the hospital is privileged to provide the plot. “We would be very proud to provide this piece of land.” He said
After visiting the plot, Prof. Sir Magdi Habib Yacoub also met with the Minister of Defense Gen. James Kabarebe, Rwanda Development Board, Rwanda Military Hospital senior officials and cardiologists to shed more light upon the program status in Rwanda.
Prof. Sir Magdi Habib Yacoub is the professor of cardiothoracic Surgery at Imperial College London and is recognized for taking part in the establishment of heart transplantation in the UK in 1980.
He also carried out the first British live lobe lung transplant and went on to perform more transplants than any other surgeon in the world.
